Main Research Areas

The main research areas range from ocean governance, law of the sea & maritime law, blue economy and sustainability. Within these fields, the NOVA OCEAN Knowledge Centre seeks to develop projects relevant to the current national and international scientific challenges.

Portuguese Blue Biobank Project

The project aims to build a Portuguese blue biobank serving as a sustainable basis for the development of differentiated and innovative biotechnology. NOVA OCEAN contributes in the development of a draft legislation to regulate the access and use of marine genetic resources within Portuguese national waters.

Women in the Blue Economy: an Empirical Analysis Project

The project explores women's roles and impacts in fisheries and shipping across Portugal, Cape Verde, and Japan. It offers evidence-based insights and policy recommendations to advance gender equality in the blue economy.
